EAGLE EYE INSTITUTE’S MISSION

is to engage and empower urban people from low income communities, especially youth of color, to play a positive role in caring for our environment. This is accomplished by building the commitment and capacity of individuals and organizations, involved with youth development and with the environment, to effectively engage urban people from low income communities as stewards of the environment and environmental leaders.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary responsibilities of this full-time position are to coordinate and manage the E.A.G.L.E. (Earth Advocates: Green Leaders for the Environment) program. The Program Manager works with Eagle Eye Institute’s Board Foundation Team to ensure that the Program goals and objectives are met. The Program’s goals are:

  1. Young people from Tufts University and from Somerville and of surrounding communities acquire a new and powerful awareness of nature that transforms their view of themselves, their community, the world, and their place in it.
  2. With practice, young people from Tufts University and from Somerville and surrounding communities, build their knowledge and skills in the science and art of land and natural resource stewardship, together.
  3. With careful training, exposure, and mentoring, young people from Tufts University and from Somerville and surrounding communities, acquire a deeper understanding of the policies, programs, and activities that support youth development and environmental and community stewardship and become vocal advocates of these investments on behalf of themselves, their community, and the earth.
The three program objectives are to:
  1. Engage and train students per year from Tufts University to be coordinators of Eagle Eye awareness and stewardship programs for young people in the Boys and Girls Club of Somerville and of surrounding cities.
  2. Engage and train Tufts University students to become more effective advocates for underserved urban youth, their community, and the earth.
  3. Engage a wider community of youth development and environmental leaders in helping to develop and produce training activities in support of young people becoming advocates for themselves and the environment.

The E.A.G.L.E. Program is a set of coordinated activities intended to start urban young people on a path to becoming effective advocates for themselves and others, for their community, and for the Earth. Three experiential activities (learning, stewardship, and advocacy) focus on building awareness, responsibility, and leadership.  The activities are produced largely by trained volunteers and partners.

The Program Manager will be responsible for organizing and implementing the Institute’s proven Learn About Forests™ environmental awareness one-day programs and community service learning projects for urban youth from youth development organizations in the greater Boston area.

The Program Manager will then recruit, train and support Tufts University college students and faculty as other CHAMPIONS in providing Eagle Eye Institute’s programs in the Greater Boston community for urban youth from youth development organizations. The Program Manager will work with partners to support Champions in the field; evaluate Champions; coordinate training of Champions and administratively support program operations including identifying and securing resources necessary to support and sustain this initiative.  The Program Manager will also work with Foundation Team members in activities ultimately designed to realize the second and third program objectives.

This position also includes general office administrative duties including but not limited to answering the phone, reading and responding to emails, opening the mail, updating the database, managing the website and recruiting and working with volunteers to assist with overall program and office duties.

Specific Responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Manage Eagle Eye Institute’s E.A.G.L.E. 3-year initiative
  • Gain a complete working knowledge of Eagle Eye’s program models by reading, studying and following the Learn About Forests™ and stewardship how-to guides
  • Provide program logistical support, guidance and supervision to college student interns and volunteers who are Eagle Eye program Champions
  • Communicate with program partners; natural sites, youth development organizations and natural resource professionals
  • Evaluate Champions; conduct post-program in-person and/or phone evaluations of Champions including use of written evaluations
  • Continue outreach within Tufts University to recruit student interns and volunteers to be program Champions
  • Continue outreach and promotion within the wider Tufts University community to engage faculty and staff to build this initiative into a sustainable program model
  • Work with the Development Officer to identify and secure resources to support and sustain this initiative
  • Other duties as assigned
  • General office administrative duties:
  • Collect, open and disseminate mail
  • Read and respond to office email
  • Update database and website
  • Other duties as assigned

 Coordinate Eagle Eye Institute’s volunteers: 

  • Conduct planning sessions with board to determine volunteer needs 
  • Recruit and maintain volunteers to assist Eagle Eye Institute in its mission
  • Administer volunteer orientation
  • Other duties as assigned  
Qualifications
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree
  • Program management experience
  • Experience managing people and/or volunteers
  • Experience working with youth and adolescents 
  • Experience working with people of color from low-income communities
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid typing & computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access, Word & PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work alone with remote supervision and as part of a team
  • Ability to deliver products that reflect accuracy and attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record

START DATE:  April 1, 2012

HOURS: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday- Friday; Some long days, evening hours and weekends necessary especially in the summer

SALARY: $38,000- plus benefits
